Exploring the Training Process and Personal Traits of Excellent Competitors Using Grounded Theory: An Example of Electrical Engineering Cluster Students

The study was based on grounded theory and interviewed the winner of National Industry-Related Skills Competition of High School Students in Electrical and Electronic Cluster students in Taiwan. By individual depth interviews for twenty one students (trainees) and twenty one teachers (trainers) were awarded prizes. We explore the contextual framework of the students' success experience. The results of the study can be classified into two parts: the training process and personal traits. Training processes include logical reasoning, working practices and adroitness. The personal traits are concentration, curiosity, stamina, ambition and stability.

Prof. Farn-Shing Chen

Dr. Farn-Shing Chen is Dean and Professor of the College of Technology at the National Changhua University of Education (NCUE) in Taiwan. He earned his Ph.D. (1995) from the Department of Industrial Education and Technology at Iowa State University in the United States. Since 2001, he has served as professor in the Department of Industrial Education and Technology at NCUE. He teaches courses in micro-processing technology, electronic interfacing and educational research. His research interests include instructional methodology, cooperative learning, problem-based learning and educational assessment. Professor Chen has published 65 technological and educational papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings, and has supervised 75 students pursuing graduate and doctoral degrees in his field.

Hui-Wen Chou

Hui-Wen Chou is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Industrial Education & Technology at the National Changhua University of Education, Taiwan, R.O.C. He has been a member of the Changhua Counseling Group, assigned by Ministry of Education, the Director of counseling of the National Yuan Lin agricultural and Industrial vocational High School, and a Counseling teacher of the National Yuan Lin agricultural and Industrial vocational High School.

Miss Tu is a graduate student at the Department of Industrial Education and Technology at NCUE in Taiwan. Her enthusiasm in doing research based on two years of elementary school teaching experience. Finishing her thesis in the second year of her graduate studies is her current focus, with longer terms intent to extend her studies abroad.
