Clinical practice is one of the processes which are widely used in the health science teaching system. Clinical practice is expected to improve clinical skill and to produce the intellectual and manual skills required for a dental career. This study is aimed to explore the importance of factors affecting the clinical skill development of dental students in a clinical practice setting. The opinions of 191 dental students in the fourth, fifth, and sixth years during the 2007 academic year at Chiang Mai University were surveyed using a questionnaire developed through the use of both a literature review and sample interviews. The questionnaire examined the importance of factors which affect students’ clinical skill development using a Likert rating scale(1-5). The factors studied were divided into four groups, 1) Learner, 2) Instructor, 3)Teaching and learning method, and 4) Assessment. We received 182 responses, a 95.8% response rate (38.8% Males and 61.2% Females). The five most important factors were “giving opportunity to the student to practice”, “availability of instructor during clinic periods and accessibility for questions at all times”, “developing the student’s confidence to work independently”, “giving tips and tricks not found in any textbook”, and “understanding of students’ learning perception differences” at percentiles of 69.95, 69.40, 65.03, 64.48, 60.66, respectively. Besides, the factors which over half of the population considered as affecting clinical skill development at the “Mostly” level (Mode=5) were 18 factors which can be classified into three groups, Teaching and learning method (12 factors), Instructor (5 factors), and Assessment (1 factor). From student perspective, there are many factors that affect clinical skill development. To improve teaching and learning process in clinical setting, these factors should be considered.
