Towards a Re-think Paradigm for Teaching and Learning in Nigeria’s Universities: Policy Issues, Challenges and Implications
The internet has revolutionized and transformed the world; many sectors have taken the advantage of its benefits and have profited. In the education sector especially among the universities; students have communicated severally with e-mail and have also used other internet services successfully. Teachers and other educators are not left behind, they have also been involved in informal online communication and discussion processes of various forms; peer-to-peer, student-to-teacher and teacher-to-students. All of this could be harnessed and used as strength towards leveraging conventional process of teaching and learning in Nigeria’s universities. This will thereby create a computer-supported mediated environment when learning-work are augmented or conducted exclusively. The objectives therefore are to: (i) create an online teaching and learning community within and among universities in Nigeria and (ii) to foster online course delivery and proffer strategies for its sustainability. This paper seeks to suggest appropriate policy directions for a successful implementation of online collaborative teaching and learning in Nigeria’s Universities.
