Learning About the School Budget: A Constructivist Model

Most aspiring principals are not coming from a background of mathematics and fewer still have had any training in school accounting. Learning about the construction and management of a school budget and the basics of a district financial structure can be a daunting task. If the concepts are broken down into practical and useful bits of information, utilizing a constructivist model, the material can be more easily understood and absorbed by the practitioner. The responsibility of the building principal is to direct and monitor the site-based budget and to ensure that all of the financial transactions involving the building are properly managed. School financial concepts and issues mean so much more when the information can become practical and hands-on. The only practical way to understand a school budget is to formulate one and code it based upon the state's school accounting manual.

Dr. Waggoner retired as a school district superintendent and principal in Illinois in January of 2004. He served as a district superintendent for twenty-eight of those years. Dr. Waggoner came to ENMU in January of 2004 and instructs classes in the principal preparation program.
