A variety of environmental and personality variables influence all realms of adjustment, including adjustment to college. This research combines involvement in extracurricular activities, involvement in the FYE program, and hardiness as the factors we believe most likely to help first-year college students adjust to college. We expect to receive surveys from approximately 200-300 first year students at a small liberal arts college in the Midwest. An online survey consisted of questions from the Personal Views Survey and the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire as well as questions concerning involvement and additional open-ended questions about adjustment. A 2 (FYE or non-FYE) x 3 (low, moderate, or high involvement) x 3 (low, moderate, or high hardiness) factorial ANOVA will be calculated to see how these variables interact to provide first-year students with the resources to adjust to college life. The primary limitation of this study is the potential inability for it to generalize to large numbers diverse student populations.

My overall research interests focus on growth and particularly on stress-related growth. My foremost research interest is prevention of severe stress and stress-related disorders by trying to uncover the variables healthy individuals exhibit in times of stress in order to remain healthy.
