Multiculture and Equality: What Happens When Teachers Interact with Students in the Multiracial Classroom

For economic reasons, we have more and more foreign spouses in Taiwan. Most of them are from Vietnam, Myanmar, and China. Thus, the numbers of foreign spouses’ children in Taiwan have been sharply increased recently. These pupils are entering in compulsory education now. This study examines the way teachers perceive and deal with the educational problems that children of foreign spouse are facing. This study is a qualitative study design and has conducted interviews with 8 home-room teachers– working in small elementary schools in Yunlin County and Tainan County. Each of these eight teachers had at least ten students from mixed-nationality marriage family in class. Based on the analysis of interviews, observations, and related literatures, this study has the following findings: 1.Foreign spouses’ children face some serious educational problems, including academic performance and cultural accommodation. 2.Their parents can’t get well communication with teachers, and that cause some damage with the relationship between teachers and foreign students. 3.Teachers need more multicultural literacy to teach different group pupils.
